Empowering rural youth voices

Three locations per year

Since 2016, RaumPioniereZukunft has taken place annually at three locations across Brandenburg. It is a participatory initiative that empowers young people in rural areas to take an active role in shaping their living environments and to express their own visions for the future. The project provides them with a creative “toolkit” filled with methods and approaches from cultural education, enabling them to explore and articulate their ideas in diverse and innovative ways.

Turning ideas into plans

Throughout the process, children and young people are accompanied by lkj Brandenburg and numerous supporters. Together, they develop ideas, turn them into concrete plans, and carry them through to implementation. From the initial brainstorming and joint selection process to the realization of the final project, all decisions lie entirely in the hands of the participants themselves. In this way, the young people become our clients – and we encourage them to take ownership of the process.

Youth participation at the local level

The project motivates municipalities and local authorities to open their doors to children and youth. It connects young people with local councils and potential partners, supports self-organization, and encourages participants to stay engaged with their goals over a longer period of time.

Sense of empowerment and drive to shape things

Hands-on engagement fosters a sense of agency and responsibility for one’s own life. Especially in rural regions, it strengthens young people’s connection to their home communities – even where infrastructure may be limited – and inspires them to take part in shaping their local environments.

Youth-friendly municipalities in Brandenburg

RaumPioniereZukunft provides important impulses for developing youth-friendly municipalities in Brandenburg. The project’s core aim is to take the needs of children and young people seriously and to establish communication formats that guide them toward independence. What we need most is an attentive and respectful roundtable in our communities – one that excludes no one, and certainly not our future: the children and young people themselves.

Each year, we support three new locations across Brandenburg in creating spaces for youth participation, shared decision-making, and democratic education. Together with local stakeholders, we develop youth-oriented participation formats and open up concrete opportunities for young people to shape the communities they live in.
